MINDFULNESS/MEDITATION
This systematic review, published by NIH, shows wide-ranging studies showing that mindfulness meditation changes the structure of the human brain to reduce stress, reduce the size and activity of the amygdala (our "fight-or-flight'), and decrease how intensely one feels pain.
Here are instructions on how to sit zazen. Zen practice emphasizes the awareness and inseparability of body and mind, and so special attention is made to correct posture and sitting position. (Slumped and half-asleep may be relaxing -- but it's not Zen meditation!)
Here is a link to an online Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) course that is 100% fre.e. The course was created by a non-profit, Palouse Mindfulness, and based on Jon Kabat-Zinn's material. It's a self-guided course so you can go at your own pace.
